Patterdale – March 2006

Hayeswater from Thornthwaite
Crag
Wintry weather for the middle of March! This meet, held at the
Saturday was cold and cloudy, but mostly dry. Two parties set out – one going
over Boredale Hause into Bannerdale and Martindale, and the other going via Angle
Tarn on to High Street and Thornthwaite Crag. As the
picture shows, there was a fair amount of snow on the tops.
This, however, was nothing compared to the following day. By Sunday
morning the snow was coming in horizontally at valley level and some
substantial drifts were forming. This curtailed Sunday’s activities to short,
low level walks, either along the side of Ullswater
or at Aira Force, before an early finish in view of
the need to tackle the M.6 at Shap Summit, before it
became blocked!
