Patterdale= – April 2008

The Patterdale meet enjoyed another good attendance at the George Starkey Hut – we even managed to outnumber the Bedford Mountaineering Club who were sh= aring the hut with us!

The Lake District had enjoyed a mostly dry week before = our arrival, but there was still quite a bit of snow on the tops, which gave a feeling of winter to the weekend. The early arrivals on Friday managed walk= s up Place Fell and round the eastern shore of Ullswater. Conditions were quite windy, but nothing compared to the following day!

Two parties = set out on Saturday, one of which completed the traverse of St. Sunday Crag, be= fore being almost blown off the top of Fairfield. The other had an even more interesting time – an ascent of the east r= idge of Nethermost Pike (“steep and exciting” according to Wainwrigh= t, “near vertical” according to us), followed by a descent of Striding Edge, w= hich proved tricky due to the wind and the compacted snow near the top.

Sunday saw t= he usual mixture of routes, which included Sheffield Pike and a walk around th= e Aira Force waterfall.
